Newsletter Issue #6 - September 2023

We were lucky enough to co-ordinate with artist Scottie Gillespie to re-paint the Sidwell Street Alleyway (aka. chewing-gum alley) This was a community project led by Co Create. We had about 20 volunteers come to help us paint this colourful design and it has certainly put the alleyway on the map!

This project required an extreme cleanup of the alleyway prior to painting. We then set about whitewashing the walls and mapping out the artwork. Once we had allocated the design to specific areas we invited out team of volunteers to come and paint the range of colours in the necessary spaces and then finished it off with some black lines sprayed/painted over the top to add definition.

Dom

Dom is a valued member of the Co Create team! Dom has a background in teaching within both Design Technology and Art departments and has expertise in metalwork and leatherwork. These skills have proven handy for our fabrications and commissions which are often broad in their variety. He has also been leading a number of our creative courses including leatherwork and woodwork. Dom enjoys the process of creating with no real preference for medium. If you see Dom around the workshop - do say hello!

We are just a few weeks away from launching Community Thursdays! Every Thursday, the workshop will be open as a drop-in space where you are invited to come and be creative, learn new skills, share your own skills and meet new people. Beyond our courses this initiative aims to further community engagement and aid wellbeing for the individuals who come.

Each Thursday, there will be a variety of table top creative activities happening in our studio space (from door wedge making, to clothes mending, through to upcycling!). Most of these creative activities will be headed up by friends of Co Create who have come through some of our previous creative courses - and are now wanting to share the skills they’ve learned with others. You can check out what’s going on in September & October by looking at our courses page.

Community Thursdays also offers the opportunity to make some of our products for Co Create Shop in the upstairs workshop.

The drop-in space will be open from 9:30am through to 3:30pm, and we’ll enjoy a free lunch together at 12:30pm. You don’t need to sign up for this, you are welcome to just come along. However, if you are interested in volunteering to make some of our products for the Co Create Shop, it would be helpful for us if you could sign up below.

Our first Community Thursdays is happening on September 14th. We’d love to see you there!
